Diabetes and Hair Loss

Diabetes is caused when our metabolism cannot burn carbohydrates efficiently from blood. This disturbs blood glucose levels and blood circulation to all corners of skin is affected severely. As a result skin becomes highly sensitive and the risk of skin getting affected with infections and ailments increase drastically.

Diabetes often leads to hair loss because of poor blood circulation. When blood is not circulated properly to all corners of skin, hair follicles cannot absorb required nutrients and remain mal-nourished. This causes hair to grow weak and thin, eventually over a period of time hairs start falling and may result in partial or complete baldness.

Scientists also opine that the main relation between diabetes and hair loss is due to stress. Diabetes is a hormonal disorder and can cause excessive anxiety, depression and stress which in turn become major cause for hair loss. There are several other factors which are regarded as main reasons for hair loss in diabetic patients:

  • Certain medicines used for treating diabetes show hair loss as side effect in some patients.
  • Skin near wounds and cuts heal very slowly in diabetic patients as a result re-growth of hair on affected area is also delayed.
  • Diabetic patients run higher risk of getting affected with fungal and bacterial infections, if these infections invade scalp it also results in hair loss.
  • Normal cycle of hair growth is severely affected in diabetic patients, so the normal process of regular shedding and regeneration of hairs is impaired.
  • Hair loss may also be caused due to autoimmune system in diabetic patients.
  • Other autoimmune problems like affected thyroid glands, anemia, skin rashes etc also are major causes of hair loss in diabetic patients.

Best way to check such hair loss due to diabetes is to control diabetes and keep the blood glucose levels normal. If you have diabetes you must take extra care of your hairs and make sure you follow all the guidelines provided to you from your medical practitioner.
