Androgenetic alopecia or female hair loss is the most common type of hair loss found in women. After recent surveys American Hair Loss Council reports that almost one third population of women suffer with female hair loss.

Female hair loss is most common in women after attaining menopause but it is also observed that in some young women hair loss may begin even from the age of puberty. But this may not be complete hair loss like in men, in females hair loss follows a particular pattern and usually predominant thinning of hairs occur at top and front side of scalp.

Some of the common causes of female hair loss are:

  • Discontinuation of contraceptive pills after prolonged use can hair loss.
  • In many women hair loss also occur after pregnancy and child birth.
  • Sudden psychological or physical stress causes temporary hair loss, this kind of hair loss is regained once normal mental and physical state is restored.
  • Women suffering from breast cancer lose hair after chemotherapy or other radiation therapies. Hair grows back slowly after treatment is over.
  • Perming, bleaching, or dying hairs with strong chemicals for styling treatments can cause sever damage to hairs. In some cases hairs are lost permanently due to excessive usage of such harmful chemicals.
  • Poor diet and malnourished nutrition is also a major cause of hair loss in many women. Just like any other part of our body, our hairs also require certain minerals and vitamins; deficiency of any of these nutrients causes hair loss.
  • Illness like severe flu and fever also cause temporary hair loss.
  • Certain fungal infections that attack scalp may also cause hair loss.
  • Family history of losing hair is linked with genes and could be inherited.

Usually women get worried when they notice hair loss. The psychological concerns and factors like fear of cancer, embarrassment, losing self esteem etc, causes deep rooted effects like anxiety, frustration and depression which only aggravate the problem.

Whatever be the cause women need to understand that most of these causes are curable and normal hair growth could be resumed after treatment. Even if normal hairs are not back there are several options available now, with which you can easily hide your baldness or hair loss.
